Lily Allen - Lily Guests On Kaisers Album

LILY ALLEN has recorded some backing vocals for the forthcoming KAISER CHEIFS album, which is currently being produced by Mark Ronson.

Bassist Simon Rix said that the Smile star was in the studio as she is a friend of the band and Ronson's, so her contribution was essentially an impromptu performance, reports the BBC.

"Whether or not it makes it on the record is another question but we’re just trying stuff out and trying songs and we’ve written quite a few songs – some get scrapped and some get kept," he said.

Ronson has spoken of his involvement in the project, saying that the band has "written some great songs" and that he has approached his role as "a huge fan".

Elsewhere, Now magazine recently reported that LILY ALLEN threw a rowdy party at a rented bungalow in Los Angeles, causing other guests to complain until staff stepped in to stem the noise.

Frenchman accused of trying to broker sale of stolen Monet faces U.S. charge

MIAMI - A French man allegedly involved in the theft of paintings by Claude Monet and two other artists has been charged in the United States with attempting to broker the sale of the works to undercover FBI agents, federal prosecutors said Friday.

Bernard Jean Ternus, 55, was indicted by a grand jury on a single count of conspiring to sell the paintings stolen in August 2007 by masked gunmen from the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Nice, France, federal prosecutors said.

The paintings are Monet's "Cliffs Near Dieppe;" "The Lane of Poplars at Moret" by Alfred Sisley; and two 17th-century works by Jan Brueghel the Elder: "Allegory of Earth" and "Allegory of Water."

All four were recovered in Marseille June 4, after a deal was struck to sell them to the FBI undercover agents for three million euros. French national police arrested at least two other men when the art was found.

Ternus is a French citizen who lives in Cooper City, Fla., a suburb north of Miami, and several of the alleged meetings with the FBI agents took place in Miami, according to the indictment. Ternus was already in U.S. custody on a visa fraud charge. His lawyer in that case did not immediately respond Friday to an e-mail seeking comment.

According to the indictment, Ternus first met with the FBI agents in October to begin negotiations for the sale of the paintings. Those talks continued for several months in Miami and other locations, including Barcelona, Spain.

The visa fraud charge involves Ternus' alleged failure to admit on a visa application that he had been arrested in the past. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents later determined that Ternus has been arrested at least seven times in France, accused of crimes ranging from breaking and entering to robbery to assault with a deadly weapon, according to court documents.

The Monet and Sisley paintings have been stolen before from the museum in Nice. In 1998, the curator at the time staged a "heist" in which he seemed to be taken hostage by thieves who took the two Impressionist works.

The curator was later convicted and sent to prison, and the paintings were recovered from a boat docked in Nice's harbour.

The Sisley painting also was stolen in 1978 while on loan at an exhibit in Marseille.

Overseas market sees June bloom

Summer blockbusters are spreading their wings

June is bustin' out all over, as the overseas boxoffice helped make up for the 20% drop in May from last May's all-time record performance. Over the weekend, three summer blockbusters topped $20 million, one exceeded $19 million, another came up with $14 million, two surpassed $7 million, and a newcomer pulled in with almost $6 million from a limited release in small markets.

May's decline was attributed to the failure of "Speed Racer" and the fact that neither "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" nor "Iron Man" had as yet played the lucrative Japanese market. "Indiana Jones" showed over the weekend what can be accomplished in Japan, storming the market with $13.1 million from 789 screens to provide a weekend take of $23.2 million, lifting its international gross to $390.5 million and reclaiming its position as the foreign champion.

Universal/Marvel Comics' "The Incredible Hulk" dogged Indy's heels, grossing $23.1 million from 4,693 playdates in 51 markets and raised its international cume to $63.9 million, with $57.6 million coming from territories handled by Universal Pictures International and $6.3 million from Australia and New Zealand (under the aegis of Paramount Pictures International) and Spain (via Sony Pictures Releasing International).

While the femme-appeal romantic comedy counterprogrammers -- "Sex and the City," "What Happens in Vegas" and "Made of Honor" -- have so far weathered the tentpole onslaught in varying degrees, a new batch of comedies seeking wide audiences are beginning to enter the market in the hope of disproving industry belief that comedies don't travel.

Warner Bros.' spy spoof "Get Smart" teed off in a batch of smaller markets, grossing $5.9 million from 1,141 screens. According to Warners, the TV series-based entry ranked No. 1 in Brazil, Taiwan, Singapore, Greece, Chile, Peru, Puerto Rico and Panama, with Brazil recording $1.3 million from 239 prints and Taiwan bowing to $740,000 from 74 prints. "Get Smart" will hit Europe when the European soccer championship ends, arriving in Italy on July 9; France, July 16; the U.K., Aug. 22; and Japan in October.

Adam Sandler's "You Don't Mess With the Zohan" delivered $7.5 million from 1,138 screens in 11 markets, with a No. 1 bow in Australia ($4.1 million from 244 dates) and a No. 2 arrival in Russia ($1.7 million from 290), hailed as the best opening ever in the market for a Sandler film.

The next overseas arrival is Mike Myers' "The Love Guru," which takes off July 10 in Australia and is set for dates up to October.

Continuing to prove that sex can stand up to action, New Line's "Sex and the City" almost matched the weekend hauls of "Indiana Jones" and "Hulk," embracing $21.8 million from 6,319 screens in 53 territories and hoisting its international gross to $170.2 million. New openings included Russia ($3.8 million) and Spain ($2.1 million). "Sex" has delivered $45.8 million from the U.K. and $20.3 million from Germany to date.

Family animation, always a potent summer force -- currently represented by Paramount/DreamWorks' "Kung Fu Panda" -- was high on the boxoffice charts with $19.5 million from 13 markets as it continues its staggered rollout. Cume to date: $67 million.

Last week's champion, the supernatural "The Happening," pulled in $14 million after an estimated 55% drop, not unusual for a saturation release of 5,000-plus screens in more than 60 markets. The M. Night Shyamalan film held the No. 1 position in France for a second weekend, taking in $1.8 million from 550 screens for a market cume of $7.4 million.

Disney's family offering "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" maintained a rapid pace, lifting its cume to $138.8 million as it earned $7.9 million over the weekend from 4,110 screens in 30 markets. The staggered release will reach new heights this weekend when "Prince Caspian" arrives in the U.K. and France.

More weekend activity: "Made of Honor," $3.5 million (cume: $43.8 million); "What Happens in Vegas," $1.8 million (cume: $120.5 million); "21," $2.6 million (cume: $67.3 million); "Speed Racer," $1.1 million (cume: $39.8 million); and "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," $1.5 million (cume: $28.7 million).

Get ready for another blast from a comic-book adaptation. Universal/Marvel Comics' "Wanted" opens Friday day-and-date with domestic in 22 territories, including the U.K., Russia and Korea.

Mad Max

Finding Amanda

Taylor Peters (Matthew Broderick) is a television writer-producer stuck on a dog of a sitcom and not happy about the direction of his life. After finally licking his recreational drug and drinking habits, his marriage to Lorraine (Maura Tierney) is on the rocks due to his inability to quit his compulsive gambling tendencies, especially at the track. When the family learns that 20 year-old niece Amanda (Brittany Snow) is living in Vegas and working as a prostitute he finds the perfect excuse to make things right with the missus. So he drives to Vegas with the intention of finding Amanda and forcing her to come back to L.A. and enroll in a rehab program in Malibu. Sounds like a good plan but the temptations of Vegas prove too much for Taylor as he finds himself up to his neck in quicksand, taking on his errant niece, her loser boyfriend Greg (Peter Facinelli), the low-rent criminals she hooks for and the ever-present casinos beckoning him and his dwindling bank account. If Finding Amanda is any indication, Brodericks film career is more in need of resurrection than even the character he plays here. This is the kind of low-brow material that would make a bland TV movie, if it werent jacked up to R rating levels by intentionally sleazy dialogue and dumb-ass characters. Broderick, such a fine actor, is defeated by a script that makes no use of his considerable comedic talents. This moronic tale sticks Brodericks character in unlikely situations and broad circumstances that make it hard to empathize with a guy who just cant help himself--or anyone else around him. Snow (Hairspray) is a sprightly, fun actress but Amanda is beyond annoying, making her uncles efforts to save her from herself ring false. Unfortunately, there is zero chemistry between the leads, you just never believe for a moment these two have any past family history. Tierney whines through the standard wife role, playing most of her scenes on the other end of a phone line. Steve Coogan turns up as a casino enabler friend of Taylors who does him no favors when his habit starts careening out of control again. Facinelli as Amandas dead-end boyfriend is such a ridiculous caricature you have to wonder why she is with him in the first place.Writer/director Peter Tolan (TVs Rescue Me) has an extensive resume in both TV and film, so an inside showbiz tale about the downward slide of a TV writer would seem to be a snap. After all, the set up is ripe for wit and a satirical edge only an insider like Tolan can bring, but his script just goes nowhere and the characters he has created dont seem to be coming from a real place. Perhaps he was just too close to the material to see how little of it works in any coherent way. This type of (attempted ) character comedy is tough to pull off by the most talented of filmmakers, but Tolan sadly gives his cast nothing to hang on to, basically letting them all twist in the wind. The mediocre dialogue is not helped by Tolans own lifeless direction. There is no pizzazz and Vegas has never looked more drab or unexciting than it does here. Instead of Finding Amanda, better to look for something else to see.

Crowe slur sees Joan Rivers booted off talk show

Joan Rivers has been booted off a British talk show after repeatedly swearing while talking about actor Russell Crowe.

The 75-year-old comedian and actress was asked to leave British talk show Loose Women during an ad break after using two expletives to describe Crowe.

"You can bleep this later," Rivers said before launching into the tirade, failing to realise she was on a live broadcast.

Rivers has apologised, and said in a statement she had assumed her swear words would be censored after the show.

News agency AP reported Rivers also joked that the incident reminded her of her wedding night, because she had been asked to leave in the middle of that, too.
